In September 2004, twenty-one year old Tim Griffith was killed in a senseless and devastating act of violence. Tim’s mother, Stacey Redman, created the Tim Griffith Foundation in 2005 in an effort to carry Tim’s memory forward, honoring his eternal spirit. Being touched by the sudden, violent loss of a child and friend, the Tim Griffith Foundation understands the connection between addiction, violence and loss. The Foundation works to provide substance abuse treatment to those in need, violence prevention in our neighborhoods and support and comfort to bereaved families.
Addiction: Through the exceptional partnership with the County’s Bridges Program and the Service League of San Mateo County, the Tim Griffith Foundation opened Tim’s House in October 2008, which provides transitional housing for young men recovering from addiction and returning to society after incarceration. The Tim Griffith Foundation has provided the operating funds for Tim’s House since its opening and has committed to an annual contribution to Tim’s House. Each year 10-15 young men graduate from the Bridges program while living at Tim’s house and over 95% of them leave with jobs, their own housing, education plans in place and reunited with families.
Here is what one of our recent Tim’s House residents had to say about his experience there,
“I felt something I never expected to feel ever again in my life--gratitude, I was surprised and overwhelmed with gratitude for getting to be part of Tim’s House.”
Violence Prevention: The Foundation started the first ever Transition Program at Sequoia High School for youth re-entering regular high school following expulsion and/or incarceration. The graduation rate for this population of students before this program was under 20%. Returning students participating in our Transition Program are now graduating at a rate of over 86%.
“My counselor helped me and encouraged me to do better in school. She listens to me so that makes me feel good and helps me do better things in life. I realized I have someone I can trust.”
Loss: In 2010, we developed our direct service program, the Meadowlark Retreats, to provide grief support specifically for mothers and fathers who have suffered the sudden loss of a child. To date, we have provided over 80 mothers and fathers with a unique and life-changing opportunity to grieve, cope, and heal in the face of unthinkable loss. 100% of the parents who attend a Meadowlark treat report that they have a renewed sense of hope for a positive future. Below are quotes from a father and a mother after completing the Meadowlark Retreat:
“When I arrived, I felt like I had a little crack in all the blackness of my grief. After the retreat, I felt the crack was much bigger and light and hope could enter the darkness that I had been living with.”
“Thank you Tim Griffith Foundation. Together we completed a very important weekend, one that has lead to a fundamental emotional shift for me.”
Since its inception, the Tim Griffith Foundation has granted over $600,000 and provided a total of 62 grants to local organizations addressing addiction, violence or loss.
Last year Stacey Redman, founder and president of the Tim Griffith foundation was awarded the prestigious Jefferson Award for Unsung Local Heroes. Read about the well-deserved recognition on our website at www.timgriffithfoundation.org
