The Kneeland Center for Poetry, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that discovers, cultivates, and enhances the voices and works of all underrepresented poets. We create equitable spaces for poets and writers to have a voice in a time where more voices should be accentuated rather than suppressed.

ANNUAL PROGRAMS

Spirit, Health & Wealth
Mental, physical, and financial health are essential to the growth of underserved communities. This semi-annual series of community events will tackle ways in which these groups of people can begin to thrive in a society that was never meant for them. This event is being conducted with the aim of promoting awareness about mental health, encouraging the community to keep track of their health, and educating the community on how to be financially healthy citizens.

Common Ground Slam Poetry Fest

The Common Ground Poetry Fest is an annual program that accentuates the work of underrepresented poets from the Indianapolis and surrounding local communities. The purpose of this event is to bridge the gap between race, gender, culture, religion, and socioeconomic status.

Rewriting the Future, Scholarship Gala

Our annual scholarship gala, Rewriting the Future celebrates the accomplishments of The Kneeland Scholars Program Scholars, junior and senior high school student writers, adult writers, Pushcart Prize Nominees, major donors, and scholarship recipients.

The Kneeland Scholars Program

The Kneeland Scholars Program (KSP) is a four-week immersive and entertaining summer filled with workshops, classes, and life-changing experiences to help the next generation of writers unearth their creative writing abilities, passions, and talents. Over the course of four weeks, a cohort of rising seniors will engage in conversations amongst their peers, with class facilitators, and established poets, creative writing professors, publishers, and college admissions representatives. With a continued support system after the four-week program, the young writers will have the writing skills they need in order to meet college and career expectations.

The Elevation Review
The Elevation Review (TER) is an online poetry journal, published quarterly by The Kneeland Center for Poetry, Inc. The Elevation Review strives to promote the writing of underrepresented poets. As of May 1, 2021, The Elevation Review has published four issues, featuring more than 100 poets from across the world. The contributing poets come from countries and cities across the world, including but not limited to: Korea, Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, Canada, Philippines, and the United States. The poems in our issues give us an additional lens through which we can see the world. Your support allows us to continue to represent the voices who, often times, go unheard.

Why We Need Your Support

The Kneeland Center for Poetry believes that every individual possesses an inner poetic voice. The exciting, or even mundane things we do every day are, in fact, poetry. Whether we make a post on social media about the current events in an uproar or mourn the loss of a loved one, we’re all experiencing elements of poetry. This is the reason why we make it a priority to make sure as many voices are heard as possible. There is poetry in every word we speak, every move we make, every laugh we bellow. In a current poll, we learned that 41 people felt that they no longer had voices.

The world needs more people who know their voices exist, matter, and possess the skills to change the social climates around them. Writers can do that. Poets can do that. Poetry accentuates the nonverbal emotions that we are sometimes reluctant to share.

The Kneeland Center for Poetry helps poets use their voices. In our Prolific Writer Workshop, 75% of participants reflected on how the workshop altered their perceptions of poetry, even within the first two weeks of the course. And that is exactly what we hope to achieve in every workshop: poets who clearly recognize the importance of positively altering perceptions.

Unprecedented times––heinous crimes, life-threatening viruses, etc––call for all muffled voices to be heard during these times. Within the last six years, lives have been taken by senseless acts of violence, prejudice, and hatred. Mass shootings have killed innocent lives. Viruses have killed hundreds of thousands of people, young and old.

The Kneeland Center for Poetry has an obligation to provide awareness and change, in hopes that even a few can see the need for drastic and positive change in our society.

The Kneeland Center for Poetry has an obligation to promote wellness writing. We are agents of change in our mission to be a haven for all underrepresented poets. For those persons who want to explore creative writing as a permanent solution for abysmal mental health, we are working to create classes, videos, and online forums pertaining to the links between poetry and well-being.
