Treasure Island Homeless Development Initiative

A nonprofit organization

TIHDI collaborates the work of seven community-based organizations that provide residents and low-income job seekers with the tools to transform their lives through affordable housing, work readiness, employment, asset building, and vital community and support services for youth and adults.

To date, TIHDI and its members have renovated and occupied a total of 250 housing units. Over 6,000 homeless, formerly homeless and very low income San Franciscans have so far been served through affordable housing, essential support services, and economic development opportunities that employ and train low income job seekers.

TIHDI’s leadership in developing community supports for this new neighborhood have included:

  • Renovation of the only on-island childcare center

  • Development of a family support center that provides case management, mental health and employment services

  • Increased public transportation to serve island residents

  • Operation and renovation of a multi-purpose community center & computer lab

  • Securing resources for after-school and summer programs for youth

  • Operation of a neighborhood food pantry

  • Renovation of the island gymnasium

  • Establishment of recreation programs for all island residents.

TIHDI also operates a Job Broker System that provides short-term and long-term job placements for homeless and very low income San Franciscans. There are fourteen community-based organizations in San Francisco that participate in the TIHDI Job Broker System.

Our Business Assistance Center (BAC), operated by our Economic Self-Sufficiency Program (ESSP), provides access to computers to close the digital divide in our community.

The following free services are offered in the BAC to island residents to assist them in meeting their financial goals as part of our ESSP:

  • Financial Management workshops ABC’s of credit

  • Banking

  • Money Management & Budgeting

  • Resume writing & interview skills workshops

  • One-on-one assistance to island residents to order credit reports and assistance with credit improvement

  • Opening bank accounts

  • Free Tax Filing preparation as part of the United Way's, Earn It, Keep It, Save It! campaign

  • Credit Reports

  • One on one Credit Counseling

  • Computer Classes

  • Referral to address child support repayment

After a decade-long planning and approval process, the island is poised to begin additional and significant redevelopment activities in late 2016. This project will create thousands of construction-related jobs, with 25% of those jobs set aside for low-income San Franciscans, particularly Treasure Island residents. This is a unique and powerful opportunity to create lasting economic impact for low-income San Franciscans. TIHDI will play a central role in coordinating the work of our member agencies for the growing number of people we serve. TIHDI will centralize communication among providers and with residents while the island undergoes large-scale physical transformations, and will continue to lead the efforts to build a supportive community with resources and services to help residents stabilize and grow. TIHDI will continue to convene the various stakeholders to maximize our resources and to provide the communication and spaces necessary for people to feel this support.
