Striving Through Adversity to Reach Success (STARS) is the only summer program in Walker County that addresses the needs of underpriviledged children with disabilities.

  • 65% of STARS children attend Title I schools.
  • 41% live in a court appointed placement or have other than biological legal guardianship.
  • 52% live in low or very-low income homes.
  • 41% had at least one hospitalization or ER visit in the past year.
  • None of the children would have a safe, appropriate summer activity absent STARS.

Many children with disabilities need nonacademic goals addressed before realizing success in school goals. Nonacademic goals provided in differing modalities (visual, auditory and kensthetic) can improve assessment results for academic or covational goals. STARS task-oriented multi-modal curriculum helps the child increase his or her attention span, grasp new knowledge, understand previously abstract concepts, and become aware of talents.

In addition to raising childhood educational achievement and meeting specific individual goals, STARS provides children with a safe learning corridor that raises awareness and skill levels in personal health, social skills, recreation, and arts.
