Micah House provides a safe place for kids after school.  We partner with their families to influence the neighborhood where they live and we complement the public school teachers by helping students with daily homework assignments. Micah House addresses the educational, social, emotional, and spiritual needs of at-risk children ages 6-17 in high-crime, low-income neighborhoods in north Redlands, CA. The children served by Micah House share several characteristics. They tend to be (1) Latino/Hispanic or African-American, (2) low income, (3) without adult supervision after school, (4) struggling academically, and (5) at high risk for crime, teenage pregnancy, alcohol/drug use, poor health and nutrition, and dropping out of school. They share a desire for adult mentors, positive peer interaction, and academic improvement. Each afternoon a student can get help with homework and reading. Kids who are more than a grade behind in reading are assigned to a literacy specialist who developes an individualized program to help them improve. Opportunities to learn and practice life skliis are built into each day. Team work, sportsmanship, anger management, self-confidence, and computer skills are taught and reinforced as kids study, play, and build relationships with staff and volunteers.
