At Tuscaloosa's One Place our mission is to empower people to achieve their full potential.  We provide resources to promote self-sufficiency, strengthen families, and prevent child abuse and neglect; thus improving the quality of life for all members of our community.

The way TOP accomplishes this mission is through programs targeted to provide services to the entire family.  Programs include onsite parenting classes as well as in-home visitation programs, three programs designed to help fathers become dads, and courses that promote healthy relationships taught community wide.  Also, there are chances for professional growth for families with Career Development Classes as well as Adult Education (GED and ESL).    Currently, we have afterschool programs in 9 schools throughout Tuscaloosa County.  A factor that sets these programs apart is the case management component where the afterschool coordinators work with the student's family to improve their education/social goals.  TOP is also involved with juvenile court working to provide alternatives to detention. The newest program added to our services is Disaster Case Management in which our workers assess and help survivors of the April storms to fulfill any unmet needs.  Lastly, if you or someone you know needs assistance with basic needs we act as a referral service and can be a guide in getting those needs met.

Our mission has never seemed so clear until immediately after the April disaster.  TOP went into full disaster relief mode.  Our agency's location is in the disaster area and staff worked tirelessly to provide needed assistance to all that were near.  Thousands of meals were cooked and distributed, supplies were given out, and volunteers came to us from all over Alabama and the United States.  Many of the most touching events occurred when our former and current clients brought in donations and came to volunteer their time.  They all expressed wanting to give back.  One young man had participated and completed our Fatherhood Program where he received training in parenting, communication, and job search.  He had obtained a full time job and was excelling in his goals.  After the disaster he brought enough food to provide at least 300 meals for those affected by the storm.  This included feeding an out of state power company!
