1. The Better Bites Story: We partner with groups to bring healthy food that meets Better Bites' common sense nutrition guidelines to the places where youth convene: recreational facilities, schools, camps, theaters, youth groups, and restaurants. The attention-getting Better Bites bike brings healthy snacks and physical activity equipment to youth-oriented events. In 2016 Better Bites served over 8,000 youth across KY.
Your support will help us expand into more youth groups and venues!
2. The Fresh Stop Markets Story: Community organized, cooperative farmers' markets that pop-up bi-weekly in fresh food insecure neighborhoods. By partnering with churches, community centers, farms, and other institutions, participants pay (cash, credit, EBT) on a sliding scale for affordable, fresh, healthy food. In 2016, 270 families purchased over 1,000 baskets of locally grown produce for $18,600, decreasing hunger and making healthy food more accessible!
Your support will make more produce available to more hungry neighbors in Lexington.
3. The School Wellness Action Plan Story: We partner with Fayette County Public Schools to advocate for policies and practices that encourage healthy eating and physical activity in Lexington schools. We provide tools for incorporating physical activity into the classroom, serving healthy food at school events, and supporting schools in using constructive reward systems in place of rewarding children with unhealthy food or taking away recess. In 2016, we hosted 3 Simple and Sensible School Wellness workshops for 1000 FCPS educators.
Your support will increase the support we provide to Fayette County School educators in improving the wellness environments in each school.
4. Good Neighbor Stores bring healthier food to Lexington neighborhoods that don’t have nearby grocery stores. We help store owners increase the amount of healthy food stocked and make changes in store safety, appearance, and community relations. One store implemented the Bluegrass Double Dollars program, which makes SNAP (food stamp) dollars go twice as far so customers can buy local produce. 776 vouchers have been redeemed for over $3600 of local produce. At one store 15,480 lbs. of free produce has been distributed.
Your support will support these stores to expand their produce offerings to neighbors with limited grocery access.
