The University of Pittsburgh, founded in 1787, is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States. As one of the nation's distinguished comprehensive universities, the resources of the University constitute an invaluable asset for the intellectual, economic, and social enrichment of Pennsylvania, while the international prestige of the University enhances the image of Pennsylvania throughout the world.

The Pittsburgh Campus is comprised of 16 undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools. These entities include the following: the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences; the College of General Studies; the University Honors College; the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business and College of Business Administration; the School of Education; the Swanson School of Engineering; the Schools of Law, Social Work, and Information Sciences; the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs; and the University's six schools of the health sciences. The health sciences include the Graduate School of Public Health and the Schools of Dental Medicine, Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy.
