Formed at the University of Utah in 1972, the College of Science has grown to become the State of Utah's flagship institution for research and education in the physical and life sciences, and today includes more than 160 faculty and 2,000 students pursuing bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees. We work daily to achieve our vision, "to advance the frontiers of science, to excel in research and education, to contribute to society and to the public understanding of science."
To Advance the Frontiers of Science
The physical and life sciences are the foundation for all of the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) disciplines. Advancement in medicine, engineering, and pharmacology all depend on the "basic research" inquiries at the forefront of our understanding of the natural world.
To Excel in Research and Education
Our faculty have won every major teaching award offered by the University of Utah, in addition to dozens from institutions across the nation. The results of this teaching can be seen in our many thousands of successful graduates, who are now making their own contribution to the State of Utah, our nation, and the world.
More than 100 scholarships back our commitment to provide a world-class education for all. We offer financial support to students on the basis of performance, financial need, or underrepresented status. All of the programs listed below include scholarship support, which is critical to developing a diverse, well-represented, and academically excellent student body.
To Contribute to Society
Our researchers can save lives. For instance, Dr. Fred Adler and his team have developed a faster, more accurate way of determining medication intake during medical emergencies. Discoveries like these, coupled with foundational work for medical and engineering fields, contributes greatly to the communities and individuals we serve.
We realize that the role of our College and our ability to do good in society extends far beyond research and education. Our outreach programs provide direct assistance and support to underrepresented communities, including women and ethnic minorities.
Through our department,s the College of Science provides much-needed assistance to our undergraduate students. Click the projects below to find out more about the most inspiring initiatives in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics & Astronomy.
We Love Utah, and we sincerely believe that education is one of the best ways to make our great state even greater still. Thank you for your support!
