Upshur County Literacy Program

A nonprofit organization

The Upshur County Library Literacy Program believes that education can unlock human potential. We also believe that every adult should have the opportunity for education at any stage of their life. Every year, we provide our services free of charge to adults who earn degrees, certifications, and the education they need to change their lives, the lives of their families, and our community.

Our program began in 1988 when Sue Williams - a retired public schoolteacher - saw the need for an adult education program in Gilmer, Upshur County, and the surrounding area. Our students range in age from 16-72. In fact, we are the only program in this area that will accept students that are 16 years old. We provide an avenue for these younger students to gain their GED and continue their education or enter the workforce.
