The Urban Youth Harp Ensemble was founded in 2000 by Roselyn Lewis, a retired elementary school teacher, and Elizabeth Remy Johnson, the principal harpist for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and mentor for ASO Talent Development Program harp students. Our mission is to deliver quality musical instruction on the harp, and to develop music reading skills and musicianship for at-risk, urban youth.

Over the past 25 years, the Ensemble has provided free harp instruction to students in grades 5 through 12. We began as an after-school program and have since expanded to offer in-school programming. To date, we have served more than 400 harp students, with an average participation of six years.

Our program is unique for several reasons:

  1. Partnerships with Public Schools: We offer both in-school and after-school harp instruction through established partnerships with public schools.
  2. Free Access: The program is free for students and their families. In-school participants receive school grades through STEAM programs.
  3. Performance Harps and Loaner Harps: Our students have access to performance harps and can apply to receive an at-home loaner harp, at no cost. Access to practice harps outside of class significantly enhances the level of the overall program.

Your support is crucial to keeping the program free and accessible to urban at-risk youth. Donations help us provide these unique opportunities, ensuring that every student has the chance to thrive and grow through the power of music.
