Despite the Bay Area's reputation as a progressive leader, the region's urban planning and policy outcomes have not reflected progressive values. Instead, low-income communities and communities of color have disproportionately been burdened by planning decisions made without their participation.

Urban Habitat envisions a Bay Area where all residents – low-income people, people of color, and immigrants – take part in the decisions that shape their communities. We work to make sure that low-income communities of color can create a just and connected Bay Area where:

  • Affordable housing provides healthy and safe homes for all.
  • Public transit and land-use planning connect people to economic and educational opportunities, open space, and the services they need to thrive.
  • Employment honors a worker’s right to dignity and a living wage.
  • Clean air, land, and water are recognized as fundamental human rights.
