Valley Services was incorporated as a non-profit in 1992 to develop a social enterprise providing professional maintenance services and competitive employment careers for individuals with mental illness, co-occurring alcohol and drug addiction, learning disorders, history of chronic homelessness and other disadvantages. Company operations are provided in Salt Lake, Davis, Tooele and Summit Counties in Utah. At least 75% of the jobs are filled by challenged workers. Rehabilitation for many employees is achieved through working in a normal work environment. In the end of 2009 Valley Services employed 140 individuals. By January 2013 Valley Services had dramatically increase contracts and business and currently employs 294 individuals, 82% of which are people with serious mental illness and other life challenges.

 The mission of Valley Services is to enhance recovery and independence for people with mental health and other life challenges by providing employment through viable businesses delivering exceptional customer service. 

We accomplish our mission by directly and competitively employing adults with serious mental illness and other barriers while providing a valuable civic service to our community by hiring employees who are challenged. Through employment these individuals gain independence and self-sufficiency, gradually requiring less need for public and medical assistance. Employment empowers disabled workers to take increasingly greater control of their lives and to enjoy improved self-image and participate in the everyday activities of life.

Valley Services demonstrates how welfare reform can be accomplished through private enterprise, developing jobs for hard to employ populations.  The unique affirmative business approach allows the company to discriminate in favor of hiring disabled or disadvantaged workers, provide special work accommodations strengthening opportunities for self-sufficiency, work incentives, fringe benefits to empower part time workers, and recognition to promote self-esteem.  Working results in improvements and recovery.  

New businesses are evolving and self-sustaining through customer revenue.  Multiple careers are available in the following businesses: clerical, custodial, building maintenance, painting, bio-hazard clean up, graffiti removal, pest control, grounds maintenance, landscaping, sprinkler repair, fertilization, snow removal, moving, dietary, catering, vending, document imaging, secure document shredding, recycling, childcare, computer education, property management, provisional/temporary labor services, life skills education and employment education support.

The primary request from Valley Services is the opportunity to bid competitively for regular private business services. Any funds raised are used exclusively to purchase new equipment for business operations to employ additional people in need. All other operations and overhead are covered through customer revenue.
