22 veterans commit suicide each day.  There is a disproportionately high rate of homeless veterans.  We understand the issues. We are one of the only military specific legal aids in the nation run by attorneys with JAG and military experience.  Veterans Legal Institute brings in pro bono attorneys, a value of $400 or more per hour, to zealously advocate for veterans who could otherwise not afford such services. As a direct result of having a free attorney who cares, veterans are afforded the rights they deserve, lessening the daily stresses in their lives, and empowering them into self sufficiency.

Our clients will tell you the stories themselves. Take Ryan, for example. Ryan is a former Marine who deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan several times.  While deployed, Ryan experienced several traumatic events including exposure to an IED and losing some of his combat buddies.  As a direct result, Ryan suffers from severe PTSD.  VLI was able to assist Ryan in getting access to the mental health services he needs, and appeal his denial from the VA for service connected PTSD which allows him the benefits to which he is entitled. Absent attorneys from VLI, Ryan would continue to struggle with his PTSD and navigate the bureaucracy of the VA without avail.  VLI did what it does best- we get a passionate attorney to fight zealously for the client ensuring that he or she gets the benefits and justice he or she is entitled to.
