NEVADA IS #1 FOR WOMEN MURDERED-STOP THE CYCLE OF FAMILY VIOLENCE

The inception of Safe Embrace actually began after a little girl sat in silence and watched the mistreatment of women from their intimate partners. Growing up, she vowed never to become like them but found herself as an adult following in so many other's footsteps. She learned that her silence was harmful, so she rose up and began to use her voice to stop the injustices. Much to her amazement, she found others to stand beside her and advocate for those that could not stand up for themselves. That same little girl is now working for a wonderful organization that helps others find their voices, Safe Embrace.

With humble beginnings, Safe Embrace was established in 1994 to eradicate violence among women and began outreach efforts to abused victims from the faith communities. In 1999, the organization became a 501 (c) 3. In 2001, the 10-bed emergency shelter was opened and has housed over 1,600 women and children. Additionally, those who receive services, participate in educational groups, support groups, building life skills, community activities, financial planning, and therapeutic intervention. As a full service family violence intervention and prevention program, Safe Embrace grew to include a 24-hour crisis intervention hotline, community outreach and support to incarcerated women, emergency motel stays, support and educational groups, children's programs, therapy, a clothes closet and case management services. Therafter, services expanded to include legal advocacy, case management, prevention programs targeting at risk youth connected with Washoe County Juvenile Services, a bi-annual 20 hour volunteer training, and transitional housing for ten families through the "scattered" housing project (rental assistance and case management).

Women are not the only victims of intimate partner violence, and so we also offer our advocacy and outreach services to men, teens, and the LGBT community.

Reported cases of violence among women happens every 12 seconds, 1 out of 3 teen girls will have experienced teen dating violence, and 1 out of 4 women will have experienced domestic violence. Help us STOP the cycle that is affecting over 1 million women and 3 million children who witness violence in the home annually. More importantly, help us stop Nevada from being ranked #1 in homicides among women as a result of domestic violence. Safe Embrace thrives on the motto, that all people deserve the basic necessities; shelter, food, clothing, the ability to obtain an income, and the right to live free from violence. Those of us at Safe Embrace become very excited to see that an "act of kindness" goes a long way. Here's a quote from Mary (not her real name) one of our recipients, "it is so nice to see that strangers care so much about us". We strongly encourage you to donate today to help many more women like Mary to receive basic needs and begin their journey to a life free from violence.
