What would you do if you lost the ease with which you speak, follow conversation, read, or write? If all day, every day, it felt like you were living in a country where you don't speak the language very well? Most of us would end up socially isolated, and that would wear down your health - in fact, it's as bad as as smoking 7-10 cigarettes per day.
This could happen to you if you have a stroke, brain injury, or other brain disease that affects your language - and you would become one of the 2 million Americans with aphasia.
We help people with aphasia overcome social isolation and become more connected with the community, their family, and their lives. We do this by providing comprehensive information about the condition they are living with in our two-day family workshops. These workshops are hosted by facilities like Morton Plant Hospital, St. Anthony's Hospital, Blake Medical Center, Largo Medical Indian Rocks Rehab, and HealthSouth Largo.
Do you want to understand more about this condition? Download our free e-booklet here.
Mike Caputo was at the peak of his international business career at age 50 when he had a stroke that resulted in aphasia. He and his wife Kathy learned how critical it is to have a reason to get up, something to do, and people to talk with. Listen to Mike and Kathy tell their story, and what Voices of Hope for Aphasia means to them.
Your donation changes the lives of people like Roberta. Roberta lost her ability to speak and even her right to make her own health decisions after a stroke left her living in a nursing home. Through the efforts of Voices of Hope for Aphasia, her attendance at our groups, and help from her family, Roberta regained her ability to make her own decisions – a remarkable feat that rarely occurs. You can support one day of life-changing programming with a donation of only $50.
Can you do more? You can support an entire Aphasia Book Club, a program that gets people back to the joy of reading books, with a donation of $500.
Did you know that there are 10 times more people living with aphasia due to stroke in Pinellas county than there are people with ALS? But most people have never heard of aphasia.
As the only community-based aphasia organization in West Central Florida, we are working hard to bring our program to different locations around Tampa Bay. Donate now and help everyone in Tampa Bay who is affected by aphasia.
Our programs change people’s lives because they find meaning and purpose again, make new friends, and find ways to express themselves. Communication is a basic human right. Please give now.
