Vouchers for Veterans

Our mission is to show recognition and gratitude to New Hampshire and Maine Veterans and active duty military primarily by providing them with vouchers to purchase fresh food directly from farmers and food producers at local farmers markets. New Hampshire is home to a remarkable veteran population, roughly 7% of our state’s residents have served in the Armed Forces. That’s one of the highest per-capita veteran populations in the country! 

Many of these men and women are now seniors, and are living on fixed incomes. They are navigating rising food costs, health challenges, and increasing isolation. We see firsthand how something as simple as $20 to spend on food at the farmers market weekly can make a meaningful difference. Vouchers for Veterans is at 18 farmers markets in New Hampshire and Maine (also one of the highest per-capita veteran populations in the country).

To some, $20 may not seem like much, but to a veteran on a fixed income, it can mean:

• Fresh, local food in their fridge

• The ability to stretch their grocery budget for the week

• A reason to get out of the house and engage with their community

• A reminder that their service is still valued

What makes our program unique is dignity and choice. Veterans use their vouchers directly with local farmers at community farmers markets. They choose what they need, and support local small farms. They participate as a thank you for their service and as respected community members. All that is needed to participate is proof of service and residency of New Hampshire or Maine-that's it!
