We Care Foundation

A nonprofit organization

33 donors

We Care was founded in 1961 as a non-profit 501(c-3) organization to provide a recovery home for women suffering from the disease of alcoholism. One women sharing with another provides an excellent chance of recovery. In this spirit, a group of motivated women, recovered alcoholics themselves, canvassed Las Vegas and opened the first recovery home at 428 N. Eighth St. Early vistors often brought cannned goods, and We Care survived those early years by other donations ranging from money, to furniture, and even sheets. Although methods are a little more sophisticated today, the house still depends on donations for thirty to thirty-five percent of its operational expenses. In the beginning, prominet citizens and politicians of Las Vegas served as trustees, along with the Board of Directors who governed the Foundation. A fifteen member Board of Directors governs the home now. In its history, We Care has served over six thousand residents and twenty-five thousand plus outpatients. We serve the Las Vegas area mainly but do accept out-of-area referrals. In 1979 the Eighth Street property was purchased by the State Department of Highways to make way for the new expressway, and We Care moved to its current location at 2216 S. Sixth St. We Care has eight beds for residents.
