"God decided from the outset to shape the lives of those who love Him along the same lines as the life of His son." Romans 8:29, The Message. This verse tells us that God's plan, from the beginning of time, was to shape the lives of His children after the likeness of His unique and eternal son, Jesus. So Becoming Like Jesus is not just a clever motto for a church. It is the purpose of God for our lives. Paul, the apostle, even called the church 'the body of Christ', the visible manifestation of Jesus' presence in the world. But the question is: if becoming like Jesus is the purpose of our lives (and therefore our church) how do we help each other do that? The answer, of course, is too big, too deep, too profound to be reduced to any single set of actions or attitudes. But sometimes it helps to simplify complex realities. So at West Shore Free Church we have created a word picture, a metaphor designed to remind ourselves of at least six essential activities that can help us become like Jesus. We call it the body metaphor. In our minds we picture six parts of a human body--the mind, the face, the heart, hands, knees and feet--and each of these parts represents, for us, life-giving activities that we practice together as Christians.
