Meet Julie Newmar. She was a street cat. We know she had a human because she was very sweet when she arrived. She came from animal control with a baby we called Eartha. Julie, as you know, did an amazing thing by taking in two orphaned puppies as her own. She fed them, cleaned them, and loved them as any good dog mom would do. But what is amazing about Julie isn't that she took in babies who were not her own, but she took in babies that were not even her species. She did what was needed to help these boys survive. She is an example of what love is, what a good mom is, and what we should all strive to be. Julie and her babies went to rescue where they were adopted into loving forever homes. But there are many more like Julie that are still waiting and deserve that forever home.

The doors of the Wilbarger Humane Society see over 1200 cats and dogs each year. This is 10% of the estimated population of Vernon. And we operate strictly off of donations. The money YOU give pays for every vaccine, spay/neuter surgery, and kennel we use with these animals. We ask for food, litter, treats and toys as well as bleach, blankets, old bedding, and other supplies. Without YOU we would not be able to save even one life and every penny you donate stays local going toward animals from this area. EVERY. SINGLE. DOLLAR. COUNTS.

We have finally raised enough to start building additional large dog kennels to house some of our bigger dogs and plan to start a program where we can offer people who have been displaced from their homes that would like to continue to keep their beloved pets a temporary place to safely keep their dogs while continuing to look for appropriate housing. We are working with local farmers to provide feral cats as barn cats, and we will be starting a TNVR program soon to spay/neuter and vaccinate local cat colonies so they can remain with caretakers, still control pests, but they will not be breeding and spreading disease. We are also restarting our volunteer program as well as holding more adoption events. There are big things in store for the Wilbarger Humane Society and YOU can be part of the change!

YOU can help with saving lives like Julie's and with the projects that will directly benefit the animals we care for each year. But we have to have the funds to help these precious babies.

The purpose of the Wilbarger Humane Society is the prevention of cruelty to animals, to provide a haven for lost and discarded animals in the County of Wilbarger, State of Texas, and, to provide education to the human population regarding animals and their care. It is the policy of WHS to provide humane care and treatment for all animals needing protection in the area served, to seek to return lost animals to their owners; and to provide humane euthanasia when necessary.

Who We Are

The Wilbarger Humane Society began in 1977 with a group of citizens who wanted to do better for Vernon's animals. Since day one there have been workers and volunteers whose sole goal is giving a voice to those who have none. We work with rescue groups and national organizations in order to save as many lives as possible and give every animal we can a chance at a better life. It is the mission of Wilbarger Humane Society to emphasize the importance of spaying and neutering of pets to prevent unwanted animals; to protect animals from abuse, neglect, exploitation and overpopulation; to give the homeless pets a safe haven until they are adopted into good, caring homes; to support legislation that broadens the animal cruelty laws and increases the penalty to violators and to educate the public on being responsible pet owners.
