Dear Friend,

The Wolfeboro Area Farmers Market (a 501c3 organization) was founded in 2002 by local farmers, small local business, and citizens seeking to create a central venue for selling directly to the broader community. The small summer market has since grown to be year-round with more than 25 vendors. For several years, we have offered greater access to our customers by accepting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. SNAP is a federal program that offers nutrition assistance to low income families and individuals. The market’s board of directors made a commitment early on to double the value of that benefit for recipients, and we’re asking for your help to continue offering the “Double SNAP” program.

“Double SNAP” works like this. When a SNAP customer wants $20 or $30 deducted from their SNAP account, the market will double that amount and give them $40 or $60 worth of tokens to spend throughout the market. The tokens can then be used to purchase (some organic) vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, dairy, bread, eggs, honey, maple products, jams and other healthy foods. Your donation is used 100% to match our SNAP customer’s available funds. This system allows our customers to more easily access healthy local food and to buy more of it! This program provides a great incentive to eat and shop locally, helps to support both families and individuals in need, and supports the market’s mission to create an accessible venue to buy and sell local products.

For the 2019 season, we are starting with just over  $3,500 in funds that have been raised through donations, market membership dues and booth fees, towards the “Double SNAP” program. We are seeking your support to reach our goal of $10,000 for this fund. We currently are doubling SNAP token purchases up to $20. Our goal is to double this amount and be able to match up to $40 for each family or individual that would like to purchase local products at the market. If we can reach our goal, it would allow the market to serve approximately 290 families or individuals during our 24 weekly outdoor markets and 11 indoor markets.

As farmers and local food advocates, we feel it is our responsibility to help feed all members of our area community. We are seeking your donation to help us in this effort. One hundred percent of donations will support increasing the benefits of this program. This is a win-win program because it boosts our area economy and allows SNAP customers to purchase more affordable, local and healthy food.
