Founded 39 years ago as the New York Asian Women’s Center and renamed in 2017, Womankind utilizes its multidimensional Asian backgrounds to work alongside survivors of gender-based violence (i.e., domestic violence, human trafficking and sexual violence) as they build a path to healing. We work tirelessly to create a future where we Rise Above Violence and our communities can innovate towards safety, restoration, and collective well-being.
This past year has shed light on the varied experiences of Asian communities across the country and has brought them front and center in our collective consciousness. Viral videos of violence circulating, chants of "China Virus" and "Kung Flu", a deafening silence from some and a roar of pain and outrage from others.
The needs of Asian communities are ignored as we continue to be: clumped together as a monolith; obscured by the model minority myth; and perpetually marginalized by stereotypes of docility. In this state of forced invisibility, many questions arise.
What happens to communities when their pain is made invisible?
What happens when Asian survivors continue to face compounded violence?
What happens when we continue to under-fund and under-resource Asian communities?
We're so grateful to announce that longtime Womankind supporter, janetjewelry.com, has generously offered to match all donations received between today and May 31st, up to $3,000. Contribute any amount you can and DOUBLE your impact.
Your donation will not only help us reach our goal, but will also bring us one step closer to winning one of Give In May's cash prizes awarded each year.
Today, we are asking you to think about survivors and their families.
Funds raised will help us provide survivors with the critical services and resources they need to escape violence such as access to our 24/7 multilingual helpline, emergency residences (shelters), counseling, and so much more.
Help us center Asian survivors and their families in a world where they are rendered invisible. Together, let's change the narrative.
