Wonderfully Made

Wonderfully Made was started out of a desire for there to be more opportunities for kids with special needs in our community to have fun, make friends, work on social skills, and gain confidence in who they are. We saw a need for kids in our community to have a safe place to make connections with peers, work through struggles, and feel accepted and included. We also wanted to make an impact on the bullying situation these kids face far too often by utilizing peer volunteers in an effort to educate and break down the stereotypes that exist in our society. Our goal is to be a valuable resource in the Lincoln community and advocate for kids with special needs and their families.

Currently we do this through 3 program options:

Focus Groups-- Every child in a focus group has an individualized program plan designed to meet their specific social/emotional skill needs: interpersonal skills, social cues, emotional coping skills, and more. The groups are made of 3-4 kids who are similar in age and have similar goals. The Recreational Therapist running the group strives to provide a positive social experience for the kids involved to work towards their goals alongside their peers. Allowing for these skills to be learned and practiced with peers increases carry over of these skills to peer interaction at school, home, and the community.

Friendship Club--This program is designed for middle school and high school age kids with varying special needs. We do events throughout the community such as laser tag, grilling at holmes lake, pool parties and more in an effort to provide a safe and positive social experience for those involved. We hope the kids involved can make friends, have fun, work on social skills, and gain confidence in who they are. Utilizing peer volunteers for this program allows for education and exposure to break down stereotypes and form friendships.

Private Recreational Therapy--One-on-one services with a Recreational Therapist are also available and utilized when a very specific social skill needs to be addressed. We use this program as a stepping stone to eventually put the child into a Focus Group because we strongly believe that these social skills cannot be fully learned until practiced with peers.

As our programs continue to grow and we fulfill our mission of meeting the needs of more and more kids in our community we need you! We need our community to rally around us as we strive to provide resources and advocate for kids with special needs in Lincoln.
