Where Work Lives

WORK 4 is committed to the promotion of the four-day workweek, which, we believe, is a good first step towards optimizing time at work, and, consequently, towards freeing time for other activities that strengthen our families, our communities, and ourselves—all of which, in turn, make us better workers. A virtuous cycle.

Initial studies conducted across economic systems worldwide indicate that employers and employees alike, as well as the societies in which they function, have much to gain through the implementation of a shorter workweek. Greater productivity, better health, and increased economic growth are cited time and again as benefits realized by the reduction in the number of hours that employees spend “about” work. According to some estimates, the non-productive time of an employee working a typical forty-hour workweek may be as great as one, full workday per week; time that the employee could better spend elsewhere, and from which the employer could obtain greater returns by shifting it to a worker who has productive hours to offer.

Conversely, a swelling wave of studies indicates a direct link between longer working hours and stress-related illness, decreased productivity, and general personal and professional dissatisfaction—all of which make us poorer workers. A vicious cycle.

The need to develop and to expand upon the initial studies is clear, as is the need to communicate broadly the results that are already available. Such is the mission of WORK 4.

Our organization strives to promote the shorter workweek, and to function as a resource center for those employers and employees who are interested in transitioning to a better way of working. Through the commissioning and publishing of research, the hosting of conferences and webinars, and through mass communication campaigns, WORK 4 endeavors to create international platforms for exchange, through which employers and employees can learn about the benefits of a shorter workweek, and at which organizations that have already shifted to a shorter workweek can offer experience and counsel to those just getting started.

In short, WORK 4 purposes to be a leader in the generalization of the four-day workweek, and of all of the benefits that it brings. And that is why we say that Work 4 is where work lives, and where life works—better.
