The primary teaching hospital for Yale University School of Medicine (YSM), Yale-New Haven's medical staff is enhanced by 471 supervised house staff physicians (residents) who add around-the-clock coverage and sharp inquisitive minds to patient care. Yale-New Haven regularly ranks among the best hospitals in the U.S. and is accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). Relying on the skills of approximately 2,200 university-based and community physicians practicing more than 100 medical specialties, Yale-New Haven, the Children's Hospital and the Psychiatric Hospital provide services for more than 503,000 outpatient and emergency visits and 50,000 discharges each year. In addition, Yale-New Haven is the second largest employer in the area with about 6,000 employees. Yale-New Haven receives national and international referrals and, in conjunction with YSM and the Yale Cancer Center, is nationally recognized for its commitment to teaching and clinical research.
