Yavapai Humane Society was founded in 1972 by a group of concerned animal lovers. Forty-two years later we are still providing compassionate care to animals that find themselves homeless providing medical treatment to injured and abused animals, we also offer helpful programs and services to the pet owners of Yavapai County, most notably, the YHS Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic which provides low-cost and free spay/neuter surgeries to the public along with a walk-in vaccination clinic every Friday.
Our live release rate is currently 97% making YHS the safest shelter in Arizona, the Southwest, and the 2nd safest community for pets in the nation.
YHS is a private, non-profit organization. Our operations are funded primarily with donations, fundraisers, grants and the support of the community. We do have a contractual obligation to provide animal care for stray dogs and cats brought in by animal control officers of Prescott, Prescott Valley and Yavapai County, but these funds represent less than 10% of our annual income.
Do you know how much funding the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the American SPCA (ASPCA) provide the Yavapai Humane Society animals each year? The two national organizations combined?
If you said $0, you’re right. Many local residents mistakenly believe that gifts to national groups like HSUS and ASPCA will trickle down to help animals in need right here in Yavapai County.
YHS receives no funding from the national groups, nor are we governed by or affiliated with HSUS or ASPCA or any other national animal welfare group. We are a local nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to caring for homeless and needy animals in our community.
