Young Playwrights’ Theater inspires young people to realize the power of their own voices.  By teaching students to express themselves through the art of playwriting, YPT develops students’ language skills, and empowers them with the creativity, confidence and critical thinking skills they need to succeed in school and beyond. YPT honors its students by involving them in a high-quality artistic process where they feel simultaneously respected and challenged and by engaging professional theater artists in producing student plays for the community.

YPT is the only professional theater in Washington, DC dedicated entirely to arts education. Since 1995, we have reached over 13,000 students with free arts education programming, and over 83,000 audience members with free, professional productions of our students' plays. Each year, we serve over 1,500 students in public and public charter schools in all eight Wards of Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia.

By integrating free programming and performances into diverse communities across Washington, DC, YPT creates social justice by increasing equitable access to the arts in our nation's capital and bringing new narratives into DC's cultural life. We dream of a city where every young person knows the power and value of their own voice.
