Adult Literacy Plus of Southwest Arizona

Adult Literacy Plus was established as a nonprofit organization in 1981, with the intention of giving families in our surrounding community hope and an inspiration for a better future. We at Adult Literacy Plus desire to eliminate illiteracy in our community.

Currently, 29% of adults in Yuma County lack a high school credential. This number works out to about 38,000 adults in our community who are missing the opportunities that they would have if they were to achieve their GED. The U.S. Department of Labor shows that those who earn a high school credential earn close to $9,000 more a year than they would without that credential, bringing in increased tax revenue for the city and jobs for a higher skilled workforce. Statistics also show that crime is reduced by 54% for those offenders who receive a GED.

Our organization is working to change these statistics by offering adult education classes in various areas such as; reading, writing, mathematics, social studies and more. Our classes our offered at different levels, and at different times to best fit the needs of the individual. We are preparing individuals to enter the workforce, continue their education at the local community college, and be educational leaders in their families effectively stopping the cycle of high school dropouts.

As a nonprofit organization all of our funding comes from donations and grants. We are so greatful to our current partners and value their continued support. We are currently adding an additional classroom to our school and will need to purchase furnishings and technology for our students to work with, and we are striving to offer our dedicated and talented instructors a competitive salary. We realize that our current donors cannot bear this weight alone, and ask that any who are willing and able, would help us achieve our goal. Each donation, no matter the amount, will change a life for the better and make our community a better place for everyone.
