YWRAP (Young Women Reaching Accomplishable Places) is a new Mentor Program in Kern County for youth girls’ ages 10-18yrs of age. The main purpose of the program is to reach out to youth girls, providing mentorship thru groups to encourage, motivate, educate, and empower them. Helping them to set and establish goals, and take the necessary steps to accomplish them. With guidance and direction and instilling hope; YWRAP helps them to believe in themselves and overcome challenges of adolescence and become successful young women in society.
The program is designed to foster a commitment to youth girls that will promote healthy lifestyles, wellness, friendships, strong interpersonal skills, encouragement, motivation, education and empowerment. The girls meet weekly with trained mentors and participate in groups, seminars and a host of fun activities that will include but are not limited to: wellness, self-esteem building, hygiene, suicide prevention, substance abuse awareness/prevention, building healthy relationships, social media, striving for higher education, etc. We also want to give away at least 2 scholarships per year.
The program is currently being funded by the CEO of the organization as she has a passion to help the youth girls in her community. Through repeated failures in the classroom, the development of destructive habits, peer-pressures, and the challenges of childhood; at-risk young girls have lost faith in their future. Therefore, we want to show them the possibilities that await them if they are successful in putting their lives back together by instilling hope thru empowerment and mentorship. To accomplish this goal, the girls must be in a caring, inclusive learning environment that promotes their best effort and reinforces personal respect and sense of hope.
Y.W.R.A.P is a program that is in direct response to the growing number of young girls that are either falling through the cracks at school, struggling with the challenges of adolescence, or who are already entangled within the foster care system. The goal of the program is to identify girls who are going to have a turbulent transition to adulthood and offer a positive support system to avoid the pitfalls that can derail their lives. The focus is slightly different at each level but the goal remains the same; empower the young girls to make positive changes in their lives.
Y.W.R.A.P will focus primarily on middle, junior high and continuing up to high school youth girls. It is projected that within three years, 50% of the system's students, primarily girls will be in middle school. These age groups in particular, are problematic and deal with the peer pressures of adolescence and are at prime time for mentoring to be effective. If intervention can be set in place during this trying time, we believe that it will pave the way for success in the future.
The girls currently meet weekly with trained mentors, and particpate in weekly discussions, projects, community and out of town educational outings, as well as are provided with snacks, and rewards for good behavior during groups. The funds raised will help in continuning to provide materials, supplies for projects, activities, snacks, and help with funding community and out of town outings as well as. Also, the girls are learning budgeting skills through earning money during group of which they are able to purchase items from our Hope Chest, which is a store in our office that we created for them. The girls have all created a Wish List of items that they would like to be in the store, so the funds will also help with purchasing items from their Wish List.
YWRAP will consider your donation to be a tremendous help to our organization, and our organization will be very grateful for the support and our team as well as our youth will be grateful! The girls look forward to coming to group weekly, as well as they look forward to the activities, rewards, and snacks during group. The funds will be beneficial now and ongoing.
Thank you for your support in advance!
