Each woman has her own story. She may be looking to further her education, she may be trapped in a cycle of abuse, she may need a new start... Whatever her circumstances, for over 50 years, Zonta Club of Anchorage has been helping non-profits in Anchorage and around the world provide needed services to women and girls of all incomes and backgrounds. With each life we touch, multiple lives are improved. Recognizing and encouraging the potential of women is the most important thing we, as a society, can do.
In the past 50 years, we have provided scholarships to women and girls seeking to further their education through the Amelia Earhart Fellowship, Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship, The Young Women in Public Affairs Program and through supporting Pearson College. We have provided support and funding for 2 Z-Clubs since their inception in 1978.
We are also a service club. Since 2006 Zonta members have spent an afternoon each week with the girls residing in Salvation Army’s Booth Home. Time spent there creating, crafting or cooking provides the residents with something fun to look forward to and, more importantly, it shows the girls that someone outside of the system cares for them and wants to spend time with them without it being their “job”. Last year we also had the opportunity to refurbish one of the Booth Home bedrooms - bringing the wiring up to code, painting and installing bedside lamps, dressers, window coverings and bedding. Also, Zonta creates the personal hygiene bags that are given to the inmates of Hiland Mountain Correctional Center participating in Bridges to Success program. Each year Zonta sponsors a bike for Anchorage Parks & Rec‘s 50 Bikes for 50 Kids event and sends a team of Zontians to help the recipient assemble their new bike. Recipients are nominated by community members based on good citizenship. Along with individual, one time only projects, other annual or ongoing service projects include wrapping holiday presents for First Book’s fundraiser, painting for United Way, building a wreath for STAR and coordinating food & clothing donations for women's shelters.
As times and needs have evolved in the past 50 years, Zonta Club of Anchorage’s support and service commitments have adapted to meet these changes.
