American Gateways

American Gateways has served the
Central Texas immigrant community since 1987.  Our mission is to champion
the dignity and human rights of immigrants, refugees, and survivors of
persecution, torture, conflict, and human trafficking through exceptional
immigration legal services. We provide free and low-cost legal services,
education, and advocacy to ensure due process and dignity for those facing
deportation and family separation. In 2024 alone, we served over 15,000
individuals from more than 68 countries. 

The demand for accessible,
high-quality immigration legal services has increased sharply in recent months,
driven by a rise in immigration enforcement and the implementation of harsh
anti-immigrant policies. We are deeply concerned by the resurgence of ICE
raids, arrests taking place at Immigration Court, the detention and separation
of families, and the pervasive fear affecting our immigrant neighbors. At the
same time, American Gateway’s ability to provide the much-needed legal services
has been significantly diminished by the abrupt loss of funding for essential
programs.

Despite these challenges, our
team has continued to innovate. In June 2024, we launched our new Pro Se
Assistance- American Gateways Project  “PAPA” in response to ICE arrests
and detentions at the Immigration Court. We are engaging with community members
coming to their court hearings at the steps of the courthouse and sharing Know
Your Rights information while ICE is present. We are also hosting off-site
legal clinics to prepare individuals with upcoming hearings. Additionally, we
began representing unrepresented, at-risk, and vulnerable individuals in court
on a limited basis when we encountered them in court to assist in challenging
dismissals of cases and subsequent arrests and detention by ICE.  

American Gateways is working
tirelessly to adapt to these challenges by expanding our legal services,
increasing outreach efforts, and partnering with community organizations to
provide holistic support. Your donation today will support our community clinics
and outreach work to empower immigrants to represent themselves effectively.
This includes delivering general information, individualized education, and
limited assistance with preparing and filing applications for immigration
relief.
