Area Substance & Alcohol Abuse Prevention (ASAAP)

A nonprofit organization

For nearly 40 years, ASAAP has worked alongside Adams County families, schools, and community partners to prevent substance misuse before it begins.

We are a community-based prevention organization focused on education, early intervention, and long-term wellness. Our work is rooted in the belief that prevention is most effective when it is proactive, consistent, and accessible — not reactive or crisis-driven.

ASAAP serves as an upstream prevention agency, meaning we focus on reducing risk factors and strengthening protective factors before substance misuse becomes a problem. We do this by creating safe spaces, delivering credible education, supporting recovery efforts, and fostering strong community connections.

All ASAAP services are:

  • FREE

  • Confidential

  • Evidence-informed

  • Accessible to all residents of Adams County

Prevention should never be limited by cost.

Our Mission

To prevent the abuse of alcohol and other substances through education, information, and community engagement — strengthening individuals, families, and systems so healthier choices are supported and sustained.

1. Keep Prevention in Our Schools

Goal: Expand free evidence-based prevention education in Adams County classrooms.

Every year, ASAAP provides structured, age-appropriate prevention programs for students ages 6–22 — at no cost to schools or families. Your support helps us:

  • Deliver classroom sessions across grade levels

  • Update curriculum materials

  • Provide vaping & opioid education

  • Train certified prevention staff

  • Expand programming to more schools

When we equip youth with coping skills, decision-making tools, and accurate information, we reduce long-term risk and build lifelong resilience.

Prevention works best when it starts early — and stays consistent.

2. Medication Safety & Drug Take-Back Initiative

Goal: Reduce access to unused prescription medications in Adams County homes.

Unused medications are a leading source of misuse. Your donation helps ASAAP provide:

  • DeTerra medication disposal pouches

  • Medication lock boxes for safe storage

  • Community education on proper disposal

  • Environmental protection awareness

  • Year-round take-back outreach

This simple step protects children, seniors, and families — while keeping medications out of landfills and waterways.

Safe storage saves lives.

3. Vaping & Opioid Awareness Expansion

Goal: Provide up-to-date education on today’s most urgent substance trends.

Youth are facing increasing exposure to vaping devices, high-potency marijuana, and counterfeit pills containing fentanyl. Your support allows ASAAP to:

  • Deliver student presentations

  • Host parent education nights

  • Provide senior citizen medication safety workshops

  • Develop updated educational materials

  • Respond quickly to emerging trends

Education must evolve as substances evolve.

Knowledge is prevention.

4. Recovery Support & Community Lending Library

Goal: Strengthen families impacted by substance misuse.

Prevention and recovery go hand in hand. Donations help us provide:

  • Free AA/NA materials

  • Recovery medallions

  • Educational books and guides

  • Lending library materials for families

  • Resources for grandparents raising grandchildren

Strong recovery support strengthens entire families — and builds healthier communities.

Recovery deserves community support.

5. Growing Together: Community Wellness Initiative

Goal: Strengthen protective factors across Adams County.

Prevention is not just about substances — it’s about connection, resilience, and belonging. This initiative supports:

  • Youth leadership opportunities

  • Community education events

  • Positive norms campaigns

  • Parent resource development

  • Collaborative partnerships

We are building a culture where healthy choices are supported and normalized.

When we grow together, we thrive together.

Every gift — large or small — helps keep ASAAP services free, accessible, and community-centered.

Together, we are:

  • Strengthening families

  • Protecting youth

  • Supporting recovery

  • Building resilience

Together, we are growing a healthier Hastings.
