“Today is about all the Americans who face discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity when they seek help. So I want to thank [AVP’s Executive Director] Sharon Stapel who’s here… for the work she’s doing -- the great work she’s doing with the Anti-Violence Project. But Sharon and all the other advocates who are focused on this community, they can’t do it alone.”
President Barack Obama, while signing the Violence Against Women Act on March 7, 2013
WHAT WE DO
AVP provides assistance and support for LGBTQ and HIV-affected survivors of hate violence, intimate partner violence, sexual violence and institutional violence through a comprehensive array of free and confidential client services.
We educate and engage our community and the public through a wide variety of activities designed to reduce violence within and against our communities and ensure the safety of our community now and for generations to come.
We also advocate for change in homophobic, biphobic and transphobic laws and policies at the city, state and federal level, documenting and amplifying the individual and collective voice of survivors of LGBTQH violence.
WHO WE ARE
Our FY13 budget is $2.99 million, and our diverse staff includes 23 full-time employees, as well as 200 volunteers.
AVP created and coordinates the first-ever New York State LGBTQ Domestic Violence Network, a coalition of anti-violence service providers, activists and policy-makers.
AVP also coordinates the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP), a network of domestic organizations dedicated to ending violence in all it forms against LGBTQ people.
MAKE AN IMPACT
While other forms of violence continue to decline throughout the city and nation, bias-related violence against LGBTQ and HIV-affected people continue to increase. AVP provides our extensive range of services aimed at solving this problem, and -- because of the support of our funders -- we provide them all for free. Generous financial support from our individual, foundation and corporate donors bring us closer to realizing our vision of a community in which all LGBTQ and HIV-affected people are safe, respected, and live free from fear of violence.
