Arizona Opera is committed to serving our community in the most fulsome way possible, investing in the future of opera, while celebrating all aspects of the art form today.
Arizona Opera NEXTGEN is an initiative that encompasses the wide variety of programs that go beyond the opera stage to develop the next generation of opera artists, audiences, and philanthropists.
Education and Community Engagement
Arizona Opera's Department of Education and Community Engagement has the highest visibility of any department in the company, and each season, more than 70,000 students and community members in Phoenix and Tucson benefit from our programs - nearly double the number of people who attend our main stage productions. Our Department of Education core activities encompasses two high-impact school programs: The Arlyn M. Brewster OepraTunity program and Student Night at the Opera. Of the schools visited statewide through these programs, 89% are Title 1 schools with limited to no access to arts programming. Our Community Engagement department presents an array of other unique programs presented throughout the year including engaging lectures, a successful book club, energizing first Friday events, and a free summer family film and gelato festival.
Marion Roose Pullin Arizona Opera Studio
The Marion Roose Pullin Arizona Opera Studio bridges the gap between academic studies and a professional career. The studio affords the opportunities and training vital to developing these young singing artists as they take their first steps into this challenging and competitive profession. With your help, we can strengthen the future of opera through a roster of emerging artists who are proud to call Arizona Opera their home company.
Production Apprentice Program
As the state's premiere opera company, Arizona Opera provides a unique opportunity for the next generation of theater technicians to work in world-class venues statewide. Throughout the season, Arizona Opera apprentices engage in all aspects of what it takes to produce quality performances: lighting design, projections, props, costumes, wigs and makeup, and stage management. By the end of their time with Arizona Opera, apprentices are ready to launch their professional careers in the competitive world of performing arts.
"Your strong voices left happy hearts. Several of the kiddos recalled your performance from last year and absolutely shared they would look forward to another performance next year."
-- Teacher, Dietz K-8 School
" I am thankful for the opportunity to partner with this stellar opera company in changing the narrative; in cultivating an appreciation, respect, and love for this amazing art form in our young people and creating an eager audience for future opera productions. This is music education at its finest." - Teacher, Leman Elementary School
