Bastion is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that builds communities of connection and person centered care to empower veterans and their families to achieve resilience and whole health.
At Bastion, no veteran heals alone. We harness the power of human relationships to help veterans heal, grow, and thrive in their post-military lives. Support Bastion to help us continue providing veterans and their families with cost-free programs, resources, and clinical services in our unique citywide community.
Residential:
“Being a resident here and having affordable rent for as long as I did, that really kind of gave me footing to catapult myself into something that had been a dream of mine for a while. And it gave me a support system to really find my confidence again, and remember that before my trauma, I actually was very, very competent. And I still am. So what it looks like, it looks like hope. And it definitely looks like the Bastion model works. And I hope that I am showing people that they can be successful in transitioning from Bastion as well.” - Bastion resident 2019-2022
“Knowing that I can rely on my neighbors, they have my back and I have theirs, and it gives me a sense of community. To me, it’s just part of my identity, being a Marine, to be helping out others. And even when I was an active duty Marine myself, that was part of our identity, volunteering our time to help out others. Because if it wasn't for Bastion, I don't think your typical neighbor would assist you in that type of role, you know? Here, I feel like I’m part of a true veterans community.” - Bastion resident since 2017
Headway brain injury program:
“Angry, bitter, lost, and unable to control my emotional and mental health, Headway was a cornerstone of my adaptation and recovery of a Traumatic Brain Injury while in the military. The empathy and care I received from the staff was exceptional, and the brotherhood of the other servicemembers and veterans who were with me in this journey only hardened my resolve to accept these circumstances and become healthier in body and in spirit. There is no doubt or question, I would not be here today without the exceptional care provided by the Headway family.” - Headway Graduate
Wellness Intensive program:
“This Wellness Intensive helped pull me back from the self-isolation and spiral of depression that had settled in. Being around other veterans, going through their trials with them, and being helped by them has been inspiring and nurturing. I am in a better place now, and feel that it is in large part due to this program.” - Cohort 4 Graduate
“I appreciate the support and dedication of the moderators. As Veterans, it takes a lot to march on beyond the hardships and memories associated with our time in service. I am so proud of our group members for putting in 10 weeks worth of work in order to heal, for sharing 10 weeks worth of advice to help others heal, and for finding the strength not to give up.” - Cohort 2 Graduate
