The Black Male Working Academy: Empowering Young Men for Excellence
My name is Roszalyn Akins, and I am blessed to be the Executive Director for the BMW Academy, Inc. for almost 20 years.
Founded in 2005 with just 40 boys in grades 6 through 8, the BMW Academy, Inc. has grown into a transformative organization dedicated to educating, motivating, and activating the potential for excellence within every African American male. At the heart of our program lies the commitment to instilling the "Well Principles," guiding our young men to be:
Together, these principles prepare our participants to be "Well-Prepared" for life’s opportunities and challenges.
Today, the BMW Academy serves more than 350 young men in grades K-12, along with their families. Our success extends beyond high school, with over 50 students currently enrolled in college and 75 alumni having graduated with degrees. Our comprehensive offerings include tutoring, mentoring, career exploration, ACT preparation, and educational and cultural enrichment trips. These initiatives meet the diverse needs of young men from various cultural and economic backgrounds, fostering academic achievement and personal growth.
Impact Beyond Statistics
At a time when young men of color face significant societal challenges—ranging from gun violence to limited access to positive role models—the BMW Academy is making a tangible difference. Through our "Power Story" series, we connect students with inspiring men from the community who share their life journeys. This exposure, combined with a nurturing brotherhood and a strong network of positive friendships, cultivates hope and ambition.
We also introduce our young men to college campuses as early as 6th grade, helping them envision a future in higher education. For those who prefer an alternative path, we provide exposure to vocational training and STEM programs, empowering them to pursue fulfilling careers that support themselves and their families.
The BMW Academy’s mission is vital to the futures of these young men and to our broader community. We offer encouragement and resources not only to the students but also to their families, equipping parents with tools to support their sons academically, mentally, and socially.
