Brass City Harvest, Inc.

$15,375 raised by 118 donors

Brass City Harvest has a mission to provide locally grown food to our community and to ensure everyone in our community has equal access to the bounty that is grown or produced in the State of Connecticut.  We host three farmers markets per week in Waterbury during the growing season, and our mobile market is on the road so we can visit more locations! In addition to supporting Connecticut farmers, we also grow food on a private parcel in the North End and on Montoe Road farmland. Whatever is not sold at our markets is donated to area soup kitchens and food pantries.  Growing food and making it accessible is not enough; we want to empower people with the confidence to create easy, budget-friendly meals that are nutritious.  We hold more than 200 healthy cooking and nutrition classes each year in the Greater Waterbury area at no charge to participants, thanks to support from our funders such as the Connecticut Community Foundation.  Food is a foundation for household resiliency, empowerment, and culture. Our programs are inclusive of all people, from all ethnicities and cultural backgrounds, and for all age groups!

Who We Are

Brass City Harvest is a non-profit Community Development Corporation that facilitates a local community food system that links Connecticut's agricultural producers to consumers located in Waterbury and the surrounding towns. The organization maintains its own urban farm, gardens, and greenhouse and is the operator of the newly constructed Brass City Regional Food Hub. The food hub is home to our nutrition education, food aggregation, distribution, and farmers' market programs. We specialize in providing senior nutrition services and contactless deliver of farm food to our most vulnerable populations thanks to the operation of the food hub. As part of our response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the rise in food insecurity, Brass City Harvest infused 200,000 pounds of fresh food into the local community, including our own farm food which is 100% distributed to seniors, the GWIM Soup Kitchen, and the Hopeville Food Pantry. We are proud members of the South End Neighborhood and have helped to bring about community investment, jobs and commerce to this neighborhood.
