Bremerton Community Theatre (BCT) is an all-volunteer 501-c-3 non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of live theater arts for the enrichment and education of the citizens of Kitsap County. BCT started life as part of a drama program intended to put a little meaning into the lives of the crowd of war-workers drawn to the Navy Yard during the war. The City of Bremerton had expanded from a population of about 15,000 in 1939 to an estimated 75,000 by 1943. This was a small town with lots of strangers, living in make-shift quarters. Many became homesick, or bored, and started to wander back home. The federal government allotted money to cities like Bremerton to pay for recreation programs - anything to keep the war workers busy and on the job. Some of that money was allocated to the Bremerton Parks and Recreation Department for an amateur drama program. BCT started in a tiny building on Broadway with a dedicated group of talented but amateur thespians and craftsman, and produced 123 plays before moving to its current location in 1974. It seems only yesterday that we were able to open our new theater building, with a real stage, rigging system, dressing rooms, and orchestra pit. BCT presents 5 main stage productions per calendar year, including one or two musicals, plus several smaller shows in our black box theater (Robert B. Stewart Performance Hall). We also support children’s theater education by presenting two full-scale youth theater productions each year as part of our BCTjr Youth Theater Program.
