ENTERTAINING, ENGAGING, ENLIGHTENING

Bunbury Theatre Company's mission is to present thought-provoking, engaging and entertaining productions that focus on issues of identity and social interest. Our 2024-2025 Season explores the range of themes that our mission encompasses.

Our season opener is on stage now through September 22. The Ferryman's Daughter is an intriguing mystery across time and space. Kate, an American marine biologist off to chart species habitat in the North Sea, encounters more than she expected upon her arrival in Germany: a white supremacist uncle, a Jewish artist who paints dike breaks, two powerful water spirits—and her long-buried past. Where will this voyage take her, and who is the mysterious girl she sees drowning?

Immediately after The Ferryman's Daughter we have two new one act plays as part of a Double Bill. The first act, The Bridge in the Distance by Clarence Holmes, Jr., is set in Selma, Alabama, in 1966, on Easter Monday - Election Day. Delve into the historic narrative of the first election where black Americans could vote. Transition to the second act, Dead Purple by local playwright Clara Burton, is set in present-day, exploring contemporary politics and societal reflections. Join us for a thought-provoking performance that bridges the past and present, offering a poignant exploration of democracy and social change.

For the holiday season we present The Gift of the Magi, based on O. Henry's famous Christmas story. This is an adaptation of the classic O. Henry short story, told through music and lyrics, of the young couple in New York on Christmas Eve 1905, who love each other very much, who attempt to buy the other a surprise Christmas present. The Last Leaf tells the tale of two impoverished young women, Sue and Johnsy, struggling to become artists in Greenwich Village, New York, in 1905 and how their aspirations are threatened when one is stricken with pneumonia.

January brings a novel comedy by Sarah Ruhl. Dead Man's Cell Phone begins with an incessantly ringing cell phone in a quiet café. A stranger at the next table who has had enough of it, and a dead man-with a lot of loose ends. Dead Man's Cellphone is a work about how we remember the dead – and how that memorialization changes us. It is the journey of a woman forced to confront her presumptions about morality, redemption, and isolation in a technologically obsessed society.

in March, join us for Bunbury's NewPlay RePlay, an exciting journey back to a past Humana Festival of New American Plays production (TBD), where we explore its lasting legacy beyond the festival stage. Stay tuned for the reveal of which play we will feature - trust us, you're going to love it!

John Patrick Shanley's Doubt: A Parable rounds out the season in May. “What do you do when you’re not sure?” So asks Father Flynn, the progressive and beloved priest at the St. Nicholas Church School in the Bronx, in his sermon. It’s 1964, and things are changing, to the chagrin of rigid principal Sister Aloysius. However, when an unconscionable accusation is leveled against the Father, Sister Aloysius realizes that the only way to get justice is to create it herself. And as for   the truth of the matter? As Father Flynn says, "Doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty.” In stunning prose, John Patrick Shanley delves into the murky shadows of moral certainty, his characters always balancing on the thin line between truth and consequences. Doubt: A Parable is an exquisite, potent drama that will raise questions and answer none, leaving the audience to grapple with the discomfort of their uncertainties.
