More information about CALM

Founded in 1980, California Living Museum exists to display and interpret native wildlife for education, recreation, conservation and research.

The museum features over 200 species of non-releasable animals and California Native plants that give visitors a unique opportunity to observe and learn how wildlife lives and adapts in a natural setting. Among the many animals that can be seen at CALM include: black bears, hawks, owls, eagles, mountain lions, bobcats, reptiles, and many more. Most notably, CALM is home to 4 endangered desert bighorn sheep through a cooperative breeding relationship with Los Angeles and San Diego Zoos. There are only 60 known to exist on exhibit nationwide. Donations are needed to pay for the care of CALM’s many animals!

In late 2016, CALM plans to open the California Coast room that will allow visitors to interact with ocean wildlife and learn about native species. The exhibit will feature a docent-led touch tank and a jellyfish display. Donations are necessary to complete this interactive and educational exhibit!

Education is at the core of CALM's mission. The zoo provides education programs to over 20,000 Kern County School children and holds over 80 informative presentations throughout the community annually. A contribution of $500 would cover the costs of a field trip for 90 students and 10 adults!

Since 1983, CALM has been open to the public for educational and recreational visits, and over 100,000 guests come to the living museum annually. CALM is accessible to people from all different backgrounds and income levels; the museum provides multi-lingual programs and materials, opens regularly for Free Kid Days, and offers discounts to seniors. In addition to its many exhibits and activities, CALM recently opened a thrilling rock climbing tower and high ropes course (The Condor Challenge) that ensures people of all ages will find adventure and fun at the living museum. Be sure to visit CALM soon!

The CALM Foundation supports capital projects at the museum and is governed by a board of local community leaders. It is a 501(c)(3) foundation and accepts tax-deductible donations.

GIVE BIG TO THE CALIFRONIA LIVING MUSEUM!

The California Living Museum, established in 1980, is more than just a museum; it’s a sanctuary where over 200 species of non-releasable animals and California native plants coexist. Our mission is to forge a connection and appreciation between our community and the California ecosystem through education, guest experiences and conservation. Visitors can experience the thrill of meeting our black bears, marvel at our hawks and eagles, and enjoy the playful personalities of our mountain lions and bobcats. CALM is also home to endangered desert bighorn sheep, a rare sight given that only 70 are showcased nationwide. In addition to these wonders, CALM has become a home for two California condors, joining a delicate global population of only 450. The museum also features the California Coast room, which includes a volunteer-led touch tank and the mesmerizing beauty of moon jellies, captivating thousands of children and adults every year. With more than 100,000 guests visiting annually, CALM offers a unique and enriching experience for all who come.

CALM is more than just a place to observe wildlife—it’s an immersive experience that offers something for everyone. Throughout the year, CALM brings the community together by creating opportunities for families to step outside, connect with nature, and make lasting memories. With a range of engaging events, CALM fosters a sense of wonder and encourages visitors of all ages to learn, explore, and enjoy the natural world in a welcoming, safe environment.

Deeply committed to enriching the local community, the California Living Museum extends its influence far beyond its gates. The museum actively engages with schools, community centers, and local events, providing valuable wildlife education and fostering a deeper understanding of conservation. Through these outreach efforts, the museum reaches people of all ages, inspiring them to connect with nature and become advocates for the preservation of California’s native wildlife. This commitment helps create a lasting impact, nurturing a sense of environmental responsibility within the community.

Because education is central to CALM's mission, we rely on your support to continue offering these transformative experiences to students, families, and visitors. As a 501(c)(3) foundation, your donations are not just gifts; they are investments that help CALM maintain our facilities, provide essential medical care to CALM residents, educate 20,000 students each year, and ultimately, help preserve native wildlife. Your support, no matter the size, is invaluable—every penny helps further our cause and ensures that CALM remains a sanctuary for wildlife and a hub of education and community engagement.
