Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh

A nonprofit organization

Mission Statement: To Engage our Community in Literacy and Learning. Vision Statement: Through Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh the people of our region will develop the literacies and connections that support individual achievement and strengthen the power of community.

Education
The Library can be a transformative place. It's one of the few places outside of school were children and young people can learn in a nonjudgmental environment, supported by their peers and mentored by caring adults whom they can trust and who serve as good role models.
Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh is a completely accessible institution, meaning every child, regardless of socio-economic status, has the opportunity to learn from the moment they are born. We're bridging not only the economic divide, but also the digital divide by providing books, learning experiences and 21st century technology. We continue to enable students to learn on their own terms at the Library, developing critical problem solving, social reading and teamwork skills that will empower them for the future.

Workforce and Economic Development
In communities nationwide, an able workforce contributes to a stable economic landscape. Locally, individuals are building skills for meaningful employment through Library programs, online resources and in-person expertise. Start-ups and established businesses use the Library for business planning. Grant seekers, grant makers and nonprofit organizations connect with each other and with research databases that can only be found at the Library. The Library is still the only place where all residents have free access to computers, the Internet and WiFi. Job seekers, career changers, small business owners and entrepreneurs come for the network but stay for the resources, programs, services and connections to organizations that can help them achieve their goals.

Neighborhood Vitality
The Library is not bound by walls. We bring learning and reading opportunities to people where they are. Senior citizens, homeless children, veterans, immigrants, the incarcerated - everyone can be part of this most literate city that we want to create.
Community-building is a natural fit for the Library. Comfortable and accessible library spaces welcome neighbors to read, think, learn, share and teach each other. Technology, equipment and mentors bridge the digital divide. Collections reflect the unique culture of each neighborhood. Libraries anchor our communities, connect neighbors and improve the quality of life in our region.
