Recently, one of our staff members shared the following story about one of our current housing participants:

"When she came to us she was living on the street. She was using drugs and alcohol, had recently been released from prison, and was in a mental health crisis! Wow, she had it all!! Since she has been housed, she has been approved for SSI Benefits, she has reconnected with mental health services and has a case manager she meets with weekly. She has been drug-free and is working on her alcohol addiction. You can see a true difference in her. She just told me yesterday that she really cares about us and our office and enjoys being able to come in and have someone to talk to. She attends all of our Life Skills classes that are available to her and she's on track to successfully graduate from the program by the end of November."

When people aren't sure what to do or where to go, and who have no place else to turn, that's where Catholic Charities steps in. Sometimes it's couples who are not able to start a family or parents who are not able to support a family; Sometimes it's a person who needs mental or financial support. Sometimes, it's the family who has lost their home to disaster or the family who has lost their home to violence and war. Regardless of the situation, our core mission is to honor human potential through service, advocacy, and invitation, in the spirit of the Gospel, so that every person experiences hope and fulfillment. 

What matters to us is HOW we do this work. This means that we are guided by the core values of (1) DIGNITY AND RESPECT whereby we strive to treat others with fairness, justice and compassion; (2) SERVICE, in which we strive to meet the needs of others; (3) ADVOCACY in which we speak on behalf of others; HOPE which is our belief that there will be positive change; and COLLABORATION as we work with others to strengthen and support our communities.

It is in the spirit of collaboration that we invite you to join us in this work of love and mercy on Giving Tuesday and throughout the year as we strive to make a difference in the lives of those who are most vulnerable in Southwest Kansas.

Recientemente, un miembro de nuestro personal compartió una historia sobre nuestros participantes actuales de vivienda:

“Cuando vino a nosotros ella estaba viviendo en las calles. Estaba consumiendo drogas y alcohol, recientemente estaba en prisión, y estaba en una crisis mental. Wow, lo tenía todo!! Desde que recibió vivienda, ha sido aprobada para el programa de Seguridad de Ingreso Suplementario, se ha reconectado con servicios de cuidado de salud mental y tiene su junta semanal con su administradora de casos. Ella ha estado libre de drogas y está trabajando en su adicción al alcohol. Puedes ver una verdadera diferencia en ella. Ayer nos dijo que ella realmente se preocupa por nosotros y nuestra oficina y disfruta venir y tener a alguien con quien platicar. Ella atiende todas nuestras clases de habilidades para la vida que están disponibles y está en un camino exitoso para graduarse del programa en Noviembre.”

Cuando alguien no está seguro de que hacer o a donde ir, que no tienen a donde recurrir es cuando Caridades Católicas entra. Pueden ser parejas que no pueden empezar una familia o padres que no pueden sostener una familia; A veces puede ser una persona que necesita ayuda mental o financiera. Puede ser la familia que perdió su hogar por algún desastre o la familia que a perdido su hogar por violencia o guerra. Independientemente de la situación, nuestra misión es honrar el potencial humano a través del servicio, apoyo, e invitación, en el espíritu del evangelio, para que cada persona experimente esperanza y cumplimiento.

Lo que nos importa es COMO hacemos nuestro trabajo. Esto significa que somos guiados por los valores fundamentales de 1) Dignidad y Respeto por lo cual tratamos a otros con igualdad, justicia, y compasión; 2) Servicio en donde tratamos de esforzarnos para satisfacer las necesidades de otros; 3) Apoyo en el cual hablamos en nombre de otros; Esperanza cual es nuestra creencia que habrá un cambio positivo; y Colaboración mientras trabajamos con otros para fortalecer y apoyar nuestras comunidades.

Es en el espíritu de colaboración que te invitamos en el trabajo de ayudar aquellos más necesitados Dando Martes durante todo el año mientras nos esforzamos para marcar la diferencia en las vidas de aquellos más vulnerables en el Sur Oeste de Kansas.
