Centro por la Justicia

A nonprofit organization

What was originally founded in 1988 as a labor union of support staff at local independent school districts in San Antonio, TX has evolved into a multifaceted, women led, Environmental Justice organization. At Southwest Workers Union (SWU), also known as Centro Por La Justicia, we see the issues faced by our members and community as connected and intertwined. This mindset allows us to creatively approach solutions from multiple angles and allows our work to ebb and flow through many sectors including: youth empowerment and organizing, workers’ rights, environmental justice, alternative economies, and so much more.

Currently, one of our big focuses for fundraising is completing construction on our building. Our building has always been so much more than an office space for staff, housing the Movement Gallery and Roots of Change garden, and we will continue that tradition as we create the first grassroots funded resiliency hub in San Antonio. This space will be a place for community to gather, organize, and build grassroots power together. We will also build space for movement history to be put lovingly on display, to house an Underground Library of important books, to host community meetings and workshops, co-working spaces, small business spaces, and even more than we can imagine.

By donating, you can help continue our long history of important work in San Antonio and beyond!
