Commission on Economic Opportunity

The Commission on Economic Opportunity (CEO) operates the Weinberg Regional Food Bank.  In 2024, we provide over 17.6 million pounds of food to about 1.1 million people. Over the last several months we have seen this number increase and that increase seems to correspond with the rising cost of food and other basic needs.  While the need is increasing, so is the cost of the very thing we provide! 
Food donations remain stagnant as supply chain and economic issues slow production and distribution of food.  Government commodity foods, which were plentiful early in the Pandemic, have dwindled.  We must turn to wholesale purchase of food to fill in the gaps and meet the urgent needs of our community.  Yet the cost of this food is climbing. 

In the summer, we know children and families will face extra challenges when it comes to making ends meet and keeping healthy food on the table.   We expect to see more families, more often over the upcoming summer months and are purchasing wholesale food items and seeking out high quality food donations right now to meet this need.

Who We Are

The Commission on Economic Opportunity (CEO) operates the Weinberg Regional Food Bank, which coordinates the charitable food network across Northeastern Pennsylvania. The Weinberg Food Bank collects and redistributes donations of food from all levels of the food system, purchases wholesale food, and receives government commodity foods.

CEO's Weinberg Regional Food Bank has over 300 partners across the region who facilitate food distribution to families, children and seniors in need. Partners include nonprofit organizations and faith-based food pantries, soup kitchens and other community programs; schools and municipalities; childcare and active adult centers; senior housing and public/low-income housing.

Since the beginning of the year, the Weinberg Food Bank has distributed over 6.5 million pounds of food to more than 275,000 people (duplicated count).
