Mission

Code.org is a non-profit dedicated to expanding access to computer science, and increasing participation by women and underrepresented minorities. Our vision is that every student in every school has the opportunity to learn computer. As such we develop and provide K-12 CS curriculum at no cost, teacher workshops, and marketing efforts aimed at breaking stereotypes through the Hour of Code.

Description

Code.org's mission is to expand CS education to all schools in the United States. We are meeting this goal through four strategies:

1) Address the diversity gap by breaking stereotypes - Code.org is raising mass awareness about the importance of CS education for all by expanding the Hour of Code, a 1-hour tutorial that introduces and engages anyone, of all ages, to learn the basics of CS.

2) Empower educators by providing teacher professional development - Code.org is helping to increase the number of qualified CS teachers in public schools across the United States by partnering with large school districts and Regional Partners to provide teacher training workshops year-round.

3) Engage and educate students by delivering innovative, online curriculum - Code.org introduces students to CS early on by developing innovative K-12 curriculum that engages female and underrepresented students of color. Code.org has created CS Fundamentals for elementary students, CS Discoveries for middle school students, and AP CS Principles for high school students.

4) Advocacy, coalition building, and partnerships - Through our work with legislators and through coalition building, our national advocacy efforts support lasting changes for CS education. Currently, we are focusing on state legislation that supports CS education funding and providing guidance and resources for CS education standards.

Students taking our courses learn real-world lessons such as how to protect themselves from cyber security threats, to build their own apps, and computer science concepts can increase their learnings in other subjects such as, physics, algebra, and natural sciences.
