OUR STORY

The Right to Read: A Giving Tuesday Story

“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.” — Frederick Douglass

For more than 40 years, we’ve been a beacon of hope in Crown Heights—standing with families,  uplifting neighbors, and opening doors to opportunity. From that legacy grew the Crown Heights  Institute for Leadership Development (CHILD), our promise that learning never ends.

Now, we’re writing a new chapter together: The Right to Read—a movement to ensure every  child in Crown Heights has the freedom, joy, and power that reading brings.

Reading is more than a skill; it’s the spark that builds confidence, curiosity, and creativity.  Through our Literacy Awareness Campaign, we’re helping children discover stories that look  like them, sound like them, and inspire them to lead.

Your support this Giving Tuesday helps us:

• Provide small-group reading sessions for struggling scholars

• Build a library of culturally relevant books

• Host family workshops that make reading a shared community experience

At CHSC, we believe literacy connects every pillar of a healthy, thriving community—academic  excellence, leadership, wellness, and creativity. When every child can read, every child can rise.

Turn the Page with Us — because the next great story starts right here in Crown Heights.

Who We Are

Crown Heights Heights Service Center, Inc. was created to empower families and children in the Crown Heights community to view the diverse aspects of education as the cornerstone upon which their entire lives will depend. Since its inception, CHSC provides a safe haven for low income and immigrant families by offering an After-school Program, Summer Camp, drug and alcohol prevention curriculum, performing arts and academic enrichment while highlighting the importance of positive decision making as a component of personal and professional success.

CHSC aspires to expand the Programs and Services and create the ‘Institute for Leadership Development’. The Institute will be an integral part to the participants’ developmental needs and will operate both during the Summer and After-school. The core of the Institute includes four components: Academic Excellence, Character and Leadership Development, Healthy Living and Nutrition and Out-of-the-Box Creative Arts.

The overarching goal is to help children improve their interpersonal skills, develop self esteem and encourage teamwork, enhance academic skills, spark intellectual curiosity and encourage them to explore their interests and expand their worldview.
