Cumberland Academy

Our vision is to empower student success by providing a nurturing environment that inspires lifelong learning while using innovative technology to develop 21st century skills and fostering an appreciation of the arts. Cumberland Academy provides a tuition-free choice in education for families in East Texas, serving students in grades K through 10.

Cumberland Academy has been filling a need in the Tyler community for over 20 years. In Fall 2015, Cumberland Academy High School opened to provide continuity after students rise through the elementary and middle schools. This year, Cumberland Academy entered the University Interscholastic League, giving middle and high school students the chance to compete in a district of East Texas schools in fine arts, academics, and athletics. Cumberland Academy does not have a school bus system, and therefore, parents have had to provide rides to field trips, events, and competitions. Now that the school has taken the next step in competition opportunities by entering the UIL, it has rented 15-passenger vans to transport high school students to events. Middle School parents are still responsible for taking their students to and from arts and athletic events.

Renting vans has become a large expense for Cumberland Academy. In the spring, athletes travel to soccer, baseball, and track and field events multiple times a week. Some teams require at least two vans to ensure the full team is able to attend. A team of 35 JV and varsity athletes would need three 15-passenger vans which poses a problem if there are only two coaches for the sport.

Cumberland Academy is fundraising to purchase a bus to alleviate ongoing rental expenses as the high school adds 11th grade in 2017-2018 and 12th grade in 2018-2019. As a public charter school, Cumberland Academy does not receive state or federal funds for transportation.
