When you donate to Dallas Habitat you are changing the lives of a family like the Oboh family.

Josiah Oboh is originally from Nigeria and has lived in Dallas for 14 years. He and his wife Carolyne Namuli (who is from Uganda) lived in a small apartment with their 2-year-old daughter, Valerie.

Josiah works as a correctional officer for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and Carolyne stays home with their daughter. In their spare time, the family enjoys picnicking in the park, listening to gospel music, and riding bicycles together.

Carloyne first heard about Habitat from a friend, who encouraged she and her husband to look into the program. They attended the Dallas Habitat Homeownership Fair in June 2018. Carolyne and Josiah found the homeownership process to be a great learning experience. In addition to the unique homebuyer education courses offered, they said the one-on-one attention from staff has been one of the best parts of the process.

The couple are so thrilled to be moving into a home of their own that can accommodate their growing family. "We wanted to give our children a stable home where they can play and where we don't have to worry about rent rising year after year", Josiah said.

To celebrate Mother's Day, the Oboh family welcomed their newest member, baby Tiffany - and, one week later, they received the keys to their new home!

Our Needs

Right now, the City of Dallas is facing an affordability crisis: a shortage of 20,000 affordable homes, a missing middle class, and low homeownership (only 42% of households own their home). Increasing access to homeownership will be more important than ever in revitalizing neighborhoods, increasing household wealth, improving the tax base, and engaging communities.

More than a roof, homeownership is a catalyst for transforming our families and communities. Research has consistently shown that owning a home can end the cycle of generational poverty; homeowners have more stable and affordable housing costs, better health, and growing asset wealth, and children of homeowners are more likely to go to college and eventually own their own home. Neighborhoods with high rates of homeownership see stronger economies, less crime, better schools, and more engaged residents.

Dallas Habitat transforms families, revitalizes neighborhoods and is working to build a better Dallas by strategically bringing together public and private funding, community leadership and vision, and thousands of volunteers. We are the largest nonprofit home builder in Dallas, constructing 25 or more homes per year. In our 33-year history, Dallas Habitat has built more than 1,700 homes in more than 25 neighborhoods in the Dallas community.
