DBI provides a safe space for girls between the ages of 8-18 who are directly impacted by parental incarceration. We believe that those that are closest to the problem are the closest to the solution. Our work is built on the phenomenological approach. Through this approach we are able to create programming for girls with incarcerated parents (formerly and currently) by girls and women with incarcerated parents. Because of our efforts to raise awareness on the detrimental impacts of mass incarceration through the lens of children with parental incarceration, our mentee list has reached over 100 families in New Orleans. Through several community and national partnerships, we were able to write and pass La Act 284 creating Louisiana's first ever Council for Children of Incarcerated Parents and Caregivers. We work to build coalitions that support all young people in Louisiana impacted by violence and incarceration. We are advocates and accomplices for all of our young people's dreams
DBI makes me feel understood. I'm so happy DBI exist because I don't feel silenced anymore. I am not too loud, too rude, or too anything here. I am just me.
-DBI mentee
I wish there was a DBI when I was growing up. I had so much shame and pain around my father's incarceration - I took it out on myself and everyone around me.
-DBI Mom
I'm thankful for the work DBI is doing with my daughter while I'm in prison. They're helping me learn how to be a better parent.
-DBI Dad
]Thank you DBI! You helped my shy little girl become this bold and beautiful young lady that isn't afraid to speak up for what she wants.
Formerly Incarcerated DBI Dad.
