treasure of a museum nestled in the heart of Media, Pennsylvania. Despite its bustling
location and accessibility via public transportation from nearby towns, the
existence, contents, and work of this institute remain one of the best-kept
secrets in the area.

A Rich History

The institute's origins are traced back to September 21,
1833, when five individuals with a shared interest in natural history and the
sciences came together to establish this remarkable institution. The present
building, which houses the museum, was constructed in 1867 following the
incorporation of Media and its designation as the county seat. The founding
objective of the association was to promote the study and diffusion of general
knowledge, establish a museum, and serve as a non-profit organization for the
people of Delaware County and adjoining areas.

A Treasure Trove of Knowledge

The museum collection, spanning three floors of the
building, continues to expand, showcasing a wealth of natural wonders and
scientific artifacts. The library houses several thousand books and other
publications in the natural sciences, many of which hold local significance or
relate to 19th-century Pennsylvania.

In addition to its impressive collection, the institute
offers a free academic-year monthly lecture program, featuring speakers from
various scientific disciplines. This program aims to foster a love for learning

Visiting the Institute

The Delaware County Institute of Science welcomes public visitors.
Free admission and tours are available on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and
on several Saturdays throughout the year. Members can also make arrangements
for tours on other days, ensuring that this hidden gem is accessible to those
who seek to explore its wonders.
